CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Two Springfield residents were killed when the car they were riding in crashed into a house in Chicopee overnight.
One of the victims was still in the hospital Wednesday, after the crash that killed the 23-year-old driver and a 29-year-old passenger.
Just after midnight Tuesday, an SUV took down a light pole and crashed into a house at the corner of Carew and Quebec streets in Chicopee. The crash killed two men, both from Springfield, and sent the second passenger to the hospital. She’d suffered serious injuries.
A quiet night had turned chaotic.
“We heard a big bang, we were calling 911. Everything just happened so fast,” said Bill Moorehouse of Chicopee. “One of the people that was in the car was trying to get help. It was all we could do.”
“There were police everywhere, the road was blocked off. It was a little hectic first thing this morning for sure,” one neighbor added.
Chicopee’s Building Inspector and Chicopee Light and Electric were called out to the crash site. The impact appeared to have pushed part of the house off its foundation, and a neighbor said the force shattered all of the car windows.
The accident took place near the Chicopee Springfield line, just beyond where Carew Street and East Street intersect. One mother said crashes there is a daily concern.
“We use to have a bus stop at the corner of East and Carew there, and we actually had to call the school department to switch that bus stop, because people fly there, and the crossing guard was just hit there,” Shawna Lawson told 22News. “It’s bad. That intersection is horrible”
The Chicopee Police Accident Reconstruction Team worked all night, investigating the crash.
We’re still waiting to hear from Chicopee Police what led up to this deadly crash.
