Three women in their 20s — a driver and two passengers — were killed when the sport utility vehicle they were in hit a utility pole and erupted in flames in Mount Sinai late Monday, Suffolk police said.
The 2010 Jeep Liberty was headed north on Mount Sinai-Coram Road, north of Hamlet Drive, at about 11 p.m. when the “horrific car accident” occurred, police said.
“For some reason the vehicle left the roadway,” and struck the utiltiy pole, then overturned — and the pole collapsed, covering the SUV in electrical wire, Suffolk police Det. Lt. David Teufel said. The SUV immediately caught fire, he said.
“We don’t believe the vehicle was driving erratically,” Teufel said.
A witness attempted to enter the car to save the women but was unable to do so because of the fire, he said.
All three people in the single-vehicle crash were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Teufel said police “have a general idea of who” the victims are but they are waiting on family members to give dental records.
